Directive 20: Outbreak (Hints & Answer)

Hint first (no full spoiler): Something contagious has entered the vault. Deletion is not disinfection.

Directive 20 declares a biohazard. A virus emoji appears inside your password, and while the outbreak lasts, a new one spawns every 6 seconds. Your password is now a petri dish, and the Committee expects it disinfected to procedure. The procedure: type the soap emoji immediately after a virus. The virus-soap pair evaporates after about a second, and that counts as one sanitized virus. The outbreak ends when 3 viruses have been sanitized and no loose viruses remain.

The full solution

Speed matters here more than anywhere else in Act III, because the 6-second spawn timer does not pause while you fumble.

  1. The moment a virus appears, click to place your cursor directly after it.
  2. Insert the soap emoji from the emoji strip, immediately after the virus, no characters between.
  3. Watch the pair evaporate. That is 1 of 3.
  4. Repeat for the next spawn. With clean execution you can sanitize each virus inside its own 6-second window and never face two at once.
  5. After the third sanitization, sweep the password for any stragglers. One loose virus keeps the outbreak alive, which keeps the spawner running.

The critical warning, in the Committee’s own spirit: deleting a virus manually does not count. Backspacing a virus removes the character, but your sanitized total stays where it was, and the spawner keeps producing. Players who panic-delete end up in an endless loop of whack-a-virus. Soap or nothing.

Example mid-outbreak fragments:

  • Apr1l🦠🧼shout (correct: soap directly after virus, about to evaporate)
  • Apr1l🦠s🧼hout (wrong: a letter sits between virus and soap, no sanitization)
  • E99🦠🧼🌱💧💧💧 (sanitizing right up against Fern’s territory, legal but nerve-racking)

Protect the Fern zone. Viruses can spawn anywhere, including near the seedling from Directive 17. When you sanitize next to Fern, place the soap precisely. Deleting through Fern or its droplets while chasing a virus is how outbreaks turn into funerals.

What breaks later

  • Directive 18 keeps running during the outbreak. Fern still drinks a droplet every 40 seconds whether or not you are busy scrubbing. A long, sloppy outbreak can quietly drain the droplets to zero. Sanitize fast, then check the water.
  • Directive 21 is safe territory: viruses and soap are emoji, and emoji score zero, so the outbreak never moves your letter total. Whatever score you locked in stays locked.
  • Length-sensitive rules take a temporary hit. Each unsanitized virus adds 1 character (emoji count as 1), and pairs evaporate after about a second. If some directive pins your exact length, expect it to flicker DENIED during the outbreak and settle once the password is clean. Fix sanitation first, cosmetics second.

The outbreak is loud but short if you follow procedure: cursor after the virus, soap, evaporate, times three, then sweep. The Committee thanks you for your hygiene and immediately begins drafting Directive 21.

Frequently asked questions

What is the answer to rule 20 in the password games?
Type the soap emoji immediately after each virus emoji. A soap placed right after a virus sanitizes the pair, which evaporates after about a second and counts toward your total. The outbreak ends once 3 viruses have been sanitized and no loose viruses remain in the password.
Why won't the outbreak end even though I keep deleting the viruses?
Deleting a virus manually removes it but does not count toward the 3 sanitized viruses needed to end the outbreak. Meanwhile a new virus spawns every 6 seconds, so deletion alone loops forever. You must sanitize with the soap emoji placed directly after a virus, three times, and clear any leftover viruses.
