Directive 17: Fern (Hints & Answer)

Hint first (no full spoiler): The Committee has assigned you a dependent. Do not remove it from the premises.

Directive 17 opens Act III with an adoption notice. The Vault Security Committee has issued you a seedling emoji named Fern. Fern is inserted into your password through the emoji strip, and from this moment on, Fern lives there. The directive is simple: Fern must stay in the password. Deleting Fern for more than about 5 seconds is death. Not DENIED. Death. Game over, followed by the Committee’s generous offer to resume from the start of Act III.

The full solution

You do not solve this rule. You survive it. The game plants Fern for you, so the checklist is short:

  1. Confirm the seedling emoji is in your password. It should appear the moment the directive is revealed.
  2. Do not select-all and retype your password. That is the most common way players accidentally evict Fern.
  3. If you must delete Fern (to relocate it, for example), get it back in under 5 seconds using the emoji strip.

Placement matters more than the rule admits. Fern will soon need neighbors on both sides, so park it somewhere with room. Good fragments:

  • Apr1l🌱shout (Fern mid-word, space to grow)
  • E99🇯🇵🌱Pepsi (Fern after other emoji, still fine)
  • Iron2%🌱 (Fern at the end works for now, but you will want a spot with two open flanks soon)

Remember the character math: an emoji counts as 1 user-perceived character. Fern nudges your length total up by exactly one, which can matter for length-sensitive directives.

What breaks later

Fern is not a one-off gag. The Committee has plans for it.

  • Directive 18 makes Fern thirsty. You will need 1 to 3 droplet emoji touching Fern directly, with no characters in between. If you buried Fern in the middle of a word, clear a space on one side now.
  • Directive 24 adds a blossom emoji that must sit directly beside Fern. Combined with the water, Fern ends up needing both flanks: droplets on one side, flower on the other. Position Fern with two open sides before those rules arrive.
  • Any rule that pushes you to rewrite large chunks of the password is a Fern hazard. When editing near the seedling, delete around it, never through it. The 5-second grace period is shorter than it sounds when three other rules are flashing DENIED.

One more note for players juggling deletions: death here is a checkpoint event, not a full reset. You resume from the start of Act III with Act I and II knowledge intact. The Committee calls this mercy. Fern calls it nothing, because Fern is a seedling and cannot talk.

Treat Fern like a load-bearing character. Everything in the rest of Act III is easier if the seedling sits in a clean, spacious spot from the start.

Frequently asked questions

What is the answer to rule 17 in the password games?
There is no answer to type. The game inserts the seedling emoji (Fern) into your password automatically via the emoji strip. Your only job is to never delete it. If Fern stays out of the password for more than about 5 seconds, it is game over.
Can I move Fern to a different spot in my password?
Yes. You can cut and re-paste or retype Fern elsewhere, as long as the seedling emoji is back in the password within about 5 seconds. Move fast and keep the gap short. Where Fern sits matters later, so put it somewhere with open space on both sides.
