Password Game Wordle Rule: Getting Today's Answer
Unofficial fan guide for Neal Agarwal's Password Game at neal.fun. We describe rules in our own words and are not affiliated with neal.fun. Done with all 35? Our original 30-directive game is a fresh gauntlet.
Midway through the Password Game, one rule requires today’s Wordle solution to appear in your password. Wordle is the New York Times daily five-letter word puzzle, and its answer changes every day, so no static answer list helps you. Two clean methods get you the word, and a couple of traps around midnight can hand you the wrong one.
Method 1: play today’s Wordle
Open the Wordle page on the New York Times site in another tab and solve it. You have six guesses, and even a failed game reveals the solution at the end. Strong starting guesses like CRANE or SLATE narrow things quickly.
Advantages: the answer is guaranteed to match your device’s date, and there is no risk of a lookup site being a day off. Disadvantage: it costs a few minutes, and if Paul has hatched, those minutes are minutes you are not watching his food supply. If your run has reached the stateful late game, use the lookup method instead.
Note: if you already played Wordle today on that device, the finished board shows the solution instantly. That makes this the fastest method of all, so consider playing Wordle before you start a Password Game run.
Method 2: look up the daily answer
Search for “Wordle answer” plus today’s date. Several outlets publish the daily solution each morning with the puzzle number and date in the headline. Cross-check two sources when possible, and confirm the date in the article matches the date on your own clock. A page that says “Wordle hints and answer for August 18” is only useful if it is August 18 where you sit.
Type the answer in lowercase unless another rule in your run forces otherwise. Five extra letters is a small cost, but placement matters, which brings us to conflicts.
The midnight timezone trap
Wordle rolls over at midnight local time, based on your device clock. Answer sites publish on their own schedules and often in a different timezone. This creates two failure modes:
- You play near midnight. If the day ticks over between reading the rule and pasting the word, the game may expect the new day’s word. Avoid starting a run within 20 minutes of midnight, or be ready to swap the word right after the rollover.
- The lookup site is ahead or behind you. Sites in timezones ahead of yours sometimes post tomorrow’s answer while it is still today for you. Always match the puzzle date, not just the headline’s word “today”.
If the game rejects a word you are sure is correct, check yesterday’s answer and tomorrow’s. One of them usually works, and that tells you exactly which direction the date mismatch went.
Handling conflicts with other rules
The Wordle answer is friendly compared to other insertions: five letters, no digits, no symbols. Your digit total from the digits rule is untouched. Still, run two checks after pasting:
- Accidental element symbols. If any rule forced capitals near the word, a capital plus a lowercase neighbor can form a chemical symbol you did not intend, which changes your atomic number sum. Scan the seam where the word meets its neighbors, and see the elements guide for the symbol-spotting method.
- Letter-based rules. Some runs include rules that ban or restrict certain letters. If today’s word collides with such a rule, you have no substitute word, so you must satisfy the other rule differently, for example by removing the banned letter from a part of the password you control.
Placement tip: paste the word at a clean boundary, next to a symbol or emoji rather than flush against other letters. That prevents accidental symbol formation and makes the word easy to find during the final timed retype.
Quick routine
- Get the word: finished Wordle board if you played today, otherwise a dated lookup, otherwise play it.
- Verify the date matches your local date.
- Paste at a clean boundary in lowercase.
- Scan the seams for accidental element symbols.
- Note the word in your notes document for the final retype.
Frequently asked questions
- Where do I find today's Wordle answer for the Password Game?
- Either play today's Wordle at the New York Times site and finish it, or search for today's Wordle answer with the current date. Several news sites publish the daily solution every morning.
- Why is the game rejecting the Wordle answer I looked up?
- You probably have yesterday's or tomorrow's word. Wordle rolls over at midnight in your local timezone, while some answer sites publish early or run on a different date. Match the site's stated date to your own.
- Does the Wordle answer break other Password Game rules?
- Rarely. It is five lowercase letters with no digits, so your digit sum is safe. The main risk is that adjacent letters combine with neighbors to form an unintended chemical element symbol, so check the letters around it.
