How to Make Any Funny Idea Actually Secure
The phrases above are memorable, but memorable alone is not enough. Do these four things:
- Make it long. Combine two ideas if needed. “OtterCEOquits” plus “WaffleStoleMyCar” gives you 29 characters. Length beats cleverness, but see step 2 before you trust it.
- Assume the phrase is worth nothing. Because these phrases are published, an attacker’s wordlist already holds them, so the base counts for zero entropy no matter how long it is. Everything protecting the account has to come from what you add yourself, and four digits and a symbol is about 18 bits, which falls in under a second. Either replace the words with generator output, or bolt on at least 10 random characters from the password generator. If that sounds like work, skip the phrase entirely and take five random words from the passphrase generator.
- Never reuse it. One joke per account. If a site leaks, the damage stops there.
- Test it. Run your final version through the password strength checker before you commit to it.
Avoid anything personal. No pet names, no birthdays, no favorite team. Attackers guess those first. A pigeon with an overdue invoice tells them nothing about you.
